New England is perhaps the most well-defined region of the United States, with more cultural uniformity and more shared heritage than other regions of the country. However, Northern and Southern New England differ in the fact that the former has always been more rural, and the latter very urban. A similar disparity can be found between the Western and Eastern parts of the region, with the added difference that the characteristic New England accent is generally absent in the West. Despite the region’s close proximity to New York City, it has always retained a clearly defined identity. The region consists of six states: Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
